This Friday we’ll be playing in Santa Fe for the first time! SuperGiant has never played a show in New Mexico’s capitol city, it’s true. But now with the opening of Corazón, Santa Fe now has their very own downtown rock venue … and it’s just steps away from the railrunner station right in the ‘heart’ of SF. Meet us up in Santa Fe this Friday the 30th for a new kind of experience.

Saturday we’ll be supporting our brothers from different mothers, Leeches of Lore. They’ll be hitting the road on a 3 week tour and although we’re still pissed at them for not inviting us to join them, we’ll still rock a show and help them bank some cash for the road. If you haven’t heard of them yet you need to check them out! Albuquerqueians come out on Saturday night to Burt’s Tiki Lounge and buy lots of merch! (from them not us)

This July marks SuperGiant’s 5 Year Anniversary. God damn time is flying

Check out a new interview with SuperGiant’s bassist Kyle Erickson on examiner.com >>

February 25, 6:20 PM – Santa Fe Metal Music Examiner – Octavio Ramos Jr.

It’s said that during the fall of 2005 four distinct galaxies collided, creating a colorful music fusion known as SuperGiant. The band has released two aural orbs, a self-titled EP and Antares.

Bassist Kyle Erickson took time out of fashioning groove to answer some questions. Read on. . . .

Give me a little history about the band and its musical style.

Kyle Erickson: “Well, all of us share a similar love of powerful, heavy, groovy rock that doesn’t bore or get generic after the first two listens—that is what gravitated us to each other and has kept us together for the past four years.

“After only six months of playing, we recorded what was supposed to be a four-song demo but ended up being an eight-song self-titled EP, which was released in the spring of 2006. Our first show was opening for stoner rock all-stars Weedeater, and since then we have been opening for many great underground rock bands. Beck even played an unannounced after-party show at our first CD release party.

“Keeping our noses to the grindstone, we have completed one two-week tour of the west coast, a three-week tour of the east coast, and numerous 2–3 and four-day mini tours, as well as releasing a 15-song album titled Antares in late 2008.”

Tell me about your green vinyl limited-edition record. What can fans expect to hear? Where can they grab a copy?

Kyle Erickson: “Having sold out of our very first album, we decided it was time to re-release it on wax. The sound on this limited-edition green vinyl captures a younger SuperGiant laying down fuzzed out guitars, heavy hitting drums, dirty bass, and a vocal performance that can make even your granny want to get down and boogey.

“This album sounds 10 times better on vinyl because of the warmth and uncompressed sound you get from an analog recreation. Humans are not digital and our music should not be any different. Go to our website or All That is Heavy to purchase yours before we run out.”

I hear SuperGiant will be featured on a live DVD, along with Suspended and SandiaMan. Tell me about this project and where fans can grab a copy.

Kyle Erickson: “All three of our bands played a ‘Concert for Cures’ concert that raised money to purchase and teach music to children with cancer. That concert was filmed, is being currently edited, and will be released sometime this spring or summer. All the bands will have them for sale at their merch tables when it is released. You can also check Concert for Cures for more info.”

How has New Mexico influenced your musical approach?

Kyle Erickson: “That is like asking how breathing oxygen has influenced our music. Music is our lives, and we all live here in Albuquerque. But, if I were to say that anything in particular has influenced us, it is probably the following: green chili, el Chupacabra, mind-melting sunsets, red chili, lowriding classics, tamales, goatheads, beautiful señoras, and of course, frybread tacos. Salud!”

What’s next for SuperGiant? Any word about a new album or performance, maybe?

Kyle Erickson: “We were thinking about starting to wear tight girl pants, cutting our hair asymmetrically, putting on makeup, and doing an ‘emo’ thing, but then we realized selling out would be an abomination towards all we live and play music for, so I guess you won’t be seeing us on any late-night shows any time soon. That aside, we are currently recording a new album titled Pistol Star, which is set for release this spring/summer, along with a professionally shot video. Open your main sail, ‘cause REVOLUTION is in the wind! Love, Life, Rock and Roll.”

Vinyl Release PartyYes it is true records are a dying art, that is precisely why we made one. There is a life in an album that far exceeds anything an ipod could ever hope to do. Thank you to everyone who came out in support of our neolithic idea of putting our music to the almighty record. We love you.

In this age of modern technology as humans continue to disconnect to one another by using technology to replace actual human interaction we find ourselves longing for the next source of instant gratification and missing opportunities to connect with real people. Yet we have convinced ourselves that being on these boxes of wires is real. There really isn’t much debate on that, its a screen with a box of wires. Do you remember when there were only phones at home? Those were the days when driving was safer because some 14 year old girl wasn’t going 70 miles an hour down Central Avenue while text messaging about the latest Hannah Montana album and the drama that happened at lunch while she ate cheetos and drank apple juice.

There was a time when strangers seemed to care more, when people were paying attention to one another rather than their phones and their computers, there was a greater sense of community. I miss those days, yet find myself enthralled and overwhelmed by all of the new shit we come up with daily. Even as I type this I chuckle at myself for communicating through this medium, I wish I could look in your eyes and speak to you and hear your response rather then hoping this translates in some way. It is fascinating to watch us fumble over one another for the latest and greatest box of wires. Someday the batteries will burn out, the satellites will fail and technology will die leaving us to panic and reinvent ourselves and our minds again. I am longing for that day, it used to be so fucking simple and inevitably will be again someday.

We have recorded the base tracks for Pistol Star and it looks as though we will have 8 new songs to share with you in 2010. With topics ranging from drunken Mexican escapades to the most finite forms of energy that bind the entire universe together. Everything is matter and a matter of perspective. Joel is going to record the vocal tracks after the new year and we are anticipating a spring release. In the interim moments between now and then enjoy your holiday celebration regardless of what you conceive God or Love to be. We are all made from the same atoms, the same energy and the same source. So however you define it or don’t, be merry and enjoy your existence.

Happy Holiday from your friends and family of SuperGiant

LOVE is all there is.
